India’s steel imports from China have surged to their highest level in seven years. From April to August 2024, over 1.1 million tons of steel were imported from China, a 32% rise compared to the previous year. This increase is driven by India’s booming infrastructure and automotive sectors. However, the flood of cheaper Chinese steel has raised concerns among Indian manufacturers, who are struggling to compete. The government is exploring trade measures to protect domestic steelmakers as imports continue to challenge local industry profitability.
